Reflexology

Reflexology is an alternative treatment involving the practice of massage or applying pressure to parts of the foot, feet, or sometimes the hands or ears. with the overall goal of encouraging a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health.

Each and every patient has their own unique experience during reflexology treatments, depending on their individual case history. Energy centres for every part of the body are mapped out across the foot. By gently massaging these, energy imbalances and blockages can be removed, restoring a free flow of energy around the body.

Reflexology treats the whole body in a physical and emotional sense, not just the prevailing symptoms. Most of our customers find reflexology an extremely relaxing and beneficial experience.

Treatable Conditions

Back Pain

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recently advised that the best evidence-based treatment for back pain is hands-on manipulation, acupuncture and exercise prescription. All these treatments are available at our clinic.

Back pain can be caused by many things such as muscles, joints, ligaments, trapped nerves, emotional issues etc. Injuries to these structures are usually caused by a number of factors such as poor posture, reduced physical fitness, work duties, sporting and lifting injuries. Over 95% of back pain cases are non-serious and can be treated by conservative means i.e. manipulation & exercise. A thorough assessment will always be carried out by a health professional at our clinic before deciding what treatment is best for you.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself.

Sciatic pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. There may be numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles or tingling and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Symptoms are usually only felt on one side of the body. Sciatica is not a diagnosis - it can be caused by a 'slipped disc', age related changes to the joints or even a muscle spasm. Treatment is directed at the cause such as spinal manipulation, massage, advice of postural changes etc.

Whiplash

Whiplash
People with a Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) present with a variety of symptoms occuring as a result of bony or soft tissue injury caused by a whiplash injury to the neck during:

An accleration-deceleration mechanism of energy transfer to the neck
A rear end or side impact motor vehicle accident
A sporting accident e.g. diving or rugby (Spitzer 1995)

Symptoms reported by people include: aching pain in the neck and back, with or without referral to the shoulders. Symptoms can be felt a few days after the injury.

Treatment of people WAD disorders includes spinal manipulation, mobilisations, massage and range of motion exercises. Return to normal activites of daily living should be encouraged as soon as possible.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis
Degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease is a group of abnormalities involving degradation of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, locking and effusion. As a result of reduced movement, muscles atrophy and ligament become more lax.

Treatment usually consists of gentle exercises, lifestyle modification and analgesics. If the pain becomes debiliating joint replacement surgery may be required.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Chronic, inflammatory disease that affects many tissues and organs, that principally attacks synovial joints. Hands, wrists and feet are commonly affected but other parts of the body can be damaged. It is an autoimmune disease, when your immune system usually fights infection starts to attack the cells that line your joints.

Symptoms develop gradually and often start in small joints, although shoulders and knees can be affected early and muscle stiffness can be prominent early. They can vary from person to person and they come and go, with flare ups been expereinced from time to time. Treatment usually consists of lifestyle modification, joint strengthening, massage, electrotherapy, joint protection and exercises

Headaches

A headache or cephalgia is pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. It can be a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and neck.

When treating headaches most people reach for pain killers. However, persisting headaches may require alternative treatments. Physiotherapy uses physical and electrical modalities to treat injury or disease to improve quality of life.

A common headache that responds well to physiotherapy is known as a cervicogenic headaches which is, pressure or damage to the neck or spine. These headaches can be caused incorrect posture, whiplash or other diseases.

Treatment can consist of mobilisation and manipulation of the joints and muscles in the neck. Exercises can be used to improve function and advice on posture will be given. Electrotherapy such as ultrasound can be applied to relieve muscle tension, hydrotherapy, heat and ice packs can be used to reduce pain.

Post-op Rehabilitation

Treatment and rehabilitation is required for people who have undergone surgery. We treat a wide range of surgical patients who have had knee and hip replacement, carpal tunnel release, tendon repairs, rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstruction and many more.

Initially chest complications should be comprimised and wound care to improve healing should be performed. Therapy will consist of rehabilitation exercises and treatment to improve range of motion and strength in the later stages. Rehabilitation will be guided to improve quality of life and enable return to normal activities of daily living.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder, where the cause is still unknown

The pain comes from connective tissue such as muscle, tendons, ligaments. People with fibromyalgia say they ache all over and their muscles feel pulled or overworked. Other symptoms include sleep disturbance, stiffness, weakness, muscle spasm and pins and needles.
Exercise improves fitness and sleep and may reduce pain and fatigue in some people with fibromyalgia. Physiotherapy can also improve stiffness, pain and tender points (shown in the diagram). Treatment can consist of mobilisations, manipulation, hot and cold packs, massage, electrotherapy and trigger pointing.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

CFS is a common name given to a variety of debiliatating disorders generally defined by persistent fatigue unrelated to exertion and not relieve by rest and the presence of other specific symptoms for a minimum of 6 months. This disorder may be referred to as Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS), myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).

A wide range of neurological, immunological and endocrine system abnormalities can be displayed. Fatigue is most common symptom, people can also experience joint pain, sleep abnormalities, cognitive difficulties, mental and physical exhaustion, muscle weakness, increased sensitivity to light, poor immune responses, digestion problems and cardiac and respiratory problems.

Treatment includes cognitive behavioural therapy, graded exercise, pacing, postural advice and education

Neurological Disorders

A neurological disorder is a disorder of the body's nervous system. Structural, biochemical and electrical abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord or in the nerves. Symptoms can include paralysis, muscle weakness, poor coordination, loss of sensation, seizures, confusion, pain and altered levels of consciousness.

There are many neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, guillian barre syndrome, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's Disease, Dementia and many more. A neurological examination is required to determine these conditions.

Physiotherapy treatment is adapted specifically to patient needs and aim to improve quality of life and promote independence. It can consist of exercise and hands on therapy such as massage and stretching. Physiotherapy aims to improve balance, coordination, strength, mood and reduce the risk of falls.
